Autumn in Lapland is full of experiences, from autumn foliage to the northern lights

Autumn in Lapland through the eyes of two travelers

Autumn in Lapland begins when the autumn foliage arrives on the fells. The last cloudberries have been picked, and the ground touched by the first night frost slowly begins to change color. First as the tundra vegetation from the north, gradually spreading south and soon covering the forests and fells as if inviting travelers to pause. The colorful display annually attracts tourists to the north, but autumn in Lapland offers much more than just stunning landscapes.

Everyone has their own reasons for loving autumn in Lapland. We asked two experienced visitors to Lapland what moments and experiences keep them coming back to the north year after year. What tips do they offer for those planning their first autumn foliage trip?

One autumn foliage trip, many reasons to return

Pause for a moment and imagine yourself in autumnal Lapland. The crisp autumn weather, the rustle of foliage-tinted twigs underfoot, red glowing lingonberries, golden fells shining in the last rays of autumn sunlight, and icy mountain streams. Only a lone raven's hoarse call breaks the silence above the fell. Here, the majestic northern fells whisper past tales of nature and forest spirits, who are believed to still roam the quiet paths, guarding the ancient fells and revealing themselves only to those who walk in nature with open senses and respect.

Lapland is full of stories: wondrous, memorable, and passed down through generations. Autumn Lapland is particularly fascinating, not just because of the autumn foliage. After the summer, nature calms, the air freshens, and there is space to breathe in the fells. Many have found in Lapland's autumn a piece of their own soulscape – and a reason to return again and again.

Quiet paths and unhurried days

Silence creeps over the fells as discreetly as the first cool mornings of autumn. It is in no rush to go anywhere. It lingers on the slopes of the fells like a whisper, resting in the valleys and moving slowly with the landscape. It reminds us that sometimes the most beautiful moments are born when nothing special happens.

In autumn, Lapland is quieter than in the winter season, and the air is pleasantly fresh and cool – perfect for a mountain bike ride or a hike in the fells. In the midst of nature, it's easy to slow down and focus on the moment.

Tero Era, 48, visits Lapland in all seasons and enjoys outdoor activities like mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. Ylläs has become his family's favorite destination over the years. "Nature, silence, and the fells always bring us back. Lapland is the best place to recover and also to get new ideas. Last autumn, I was mulling over a new business idea in Ylläs," says Tero.

Lotta Lehtinen, 36, has been returning to Lapland at autumn foliage time for five consecutive years. Especially the wide fell landscapes of Kilpisjärvi have left a strong impression on her. "For me, Lapland represents tranquility and settling down, also in a way humility towards nature's conditions. I enjoy the most in Lapland the open fell landscapes, where one can let their gaze rest. And the modest resilience combined with the strong beauty that comes across from Lapland's nature," says Lotta.

Lapland's autumn calls for slowing down

Silence is one of the greatest experiences of autumn in Lapland. When the city's sounds and rush vanish, there is space to listen to nature – and at the same time, one's own thoughts. For many, the tranquility of the fells is what clears the mind and keeps them coming back again and again. On the fells and quiet paths, the mind calms, thoughts become clearer, and nature's unhurried rhythm reminds us that not everything must be done quickly. That's why many feel they return from Lapland more rested – both mentally and physically.

–Lotta

A landscape painted by autumn foliage

Autumn foliage arrives quietly, without announcing itself. Like a mysterious relative who doesn't notify of their arrival in advance. First, creeping from the north, brushing along warm shades of red, yellow, and orange on the shrubs, dwarf birches, and mountain birches. As it progresses, the autumn foliage colors the landscape with ever-larger strokes until the entire landscape bathes in autumn colors. The golden forests and slopes and the deep red glowing shrubs create a scenery where thoughts quiet down and the gaze lingers longer than usual.

Lotta has now visited Lapland for five consecutive years during the autumn foliage season. Her favorite destination is Kilpisjärvi. "Lapland is always beautiful and different, but especially during good autumn foliage years, it comes into its full glory. The landscapes appear enchantingly beautiful with trees glowing in competition with the colors of the tundra vegetation, especially accentuated by the sunlight, but also with, for example, summit snow and mist creating wonderful contrasts to the redden glow on the ground!" says Lotta, and continues:

"Autumn foliage is different every year, which makes even familiar places varied and adds an element of surprise what kind of color palette will be found on familiar trails this year?"

A perfect autumn foliage day begins with a hike

One of Lotta's most wonderful autumn foliage experiences was the route to the three-country cairn in Kilpisjärvi and back. "On the way there, the views against the great mountain peaks of Norway and Sweden open up one more magnificent than the next, in the valley below the sun gilds the yellow birch grove while the path winds through the depths of red glowing tundra vegetation. Approaching the three-country cairn, the route descends into a birch grove and passes through shades of yellow on footbridges. On the way back, you can admire all this again from a different direction and view over Kilpisjärvi's open water until Saana once again comes into view," says Lotta.

" A perfect autumn foliage day is sunny, misty, and bright in the morning. The day starts best with a hearty and delicious breakfast, fueling you for a long day enjoying the landscapes in stunning colors. In the evening, it's lovely to return to accommodation, relax in the sauna, eat well, and watch the colors of the evening darken," Lotta continues.

Tero's perfect autumn trip day begins with a mid-morning hike to the fell, enjoying a picnic amidst beautiful scenery. The day's highlights include a sauna and good food. "One of my favorite routes in Ylläs is the Keskisenlaki circuit, which passes through the impressive landscapes of Kellostapulinkuru and Tuomikuru and is suitable for both walking and biking," says Tero.

"Lapissa Suomen ainutlaatuiset vuodenajat pääsevät oikeuksiinsa; ruskan edustama kesän päättyminen vielä viimeiseen kasvien väriloistoon on samaan aikaan kaunis ja hieman haikea." -Lotta
  • Artikkelissa kokemuksistaan kertova Tero vaeltaa kivikkoisella tunturipolulla.
-Tero

Ideal conditions for hiking

Autumn is the hiker's season. The air is cool, fresh, and full of a hint of the coming winter. Trails wind through fells tinged with autumn foliage, and behind every bend opens a new landscape, inviting you to pause and slow down. There's no rush since the destination is not the day's most important moment – the journey there is.

Lapland's autumn colors attract tourists yearly to the north, but autumn offers much more to experience. In the autumn, the nature of Lapland invites you to move at your own pace. The cool air makes hiking, cycling, and canoeing easier than in the midsummer heat, and you can spend time in nature from morning to night. Trails invite you to explore the colorful landscapes, lakes and rivers invite canoeing in calm autumn weather, and footsteps feel lighter on mountain paths. The coolness of autumn makes moving in nature particularly enjoyable, also because there are generally fewer insects than in summer, especially after mid-September. After the first frosts, mosquitoes practically disappear.

Tero's hiking tips for Ylläs

Tero enjoys the fresh air of Lapland's autumn, the incredible colors, and day hikes, mountain biking, and canoeing, for example along the Kesänkijoki river in Ylläs to Kesänkijärvi. "From the kayak, you get an incredible view of Kesänkitunturi," Tero tips.

The route to Kukastunturi in Ylläs is also one of Tero's favorites. The reindeer seen on the path have been a memorable sight as well.

"From the top of Kukastunturi, there is a stunning view towards Yllästunturi and Pallas, a place to visit every time. Nearby, the snorting reindeer stay in mind during their rutting season on Äkäskero. From the peaks of Särkitunturi and Keimiötunturi, there are incredible lake and mountain views into the national landscapes of Pallastunturi. The atmosphere and food at Lapland Hotels Pallas restaurant always make an impression."

Moving in autumn nature

In autumn, Lapland's forests open their treasure troves to those who are patient enough to walk quietly. Lingonberries glowing red in the underbrush, mushrooms growing under moss, and blueberries ripened by the past summer await gatherers in the secrets of the forest. Every berry picked into the basket and every found mushroom reminds us that nature's best treasures are often found slowly and with contemplation.

In Lapland's nature, everyone can walk in their own way. For some, it is a place to catch a breath, for others a place to find new thoughts or just to be without schedules for a moment. In the fells, there is no need for achievement – it is enough to let nature guide you. Berry picking and mushroom foraging are not only about gathering the bounty of nature – they are slow movements, observing the environment, and moments when haste is forgotten without notice.

"Moving in nature calms and relaxes the mind. This is best fulfilled in Lapland above the tree line, where you can rest your eyes on the distant horizon and feel how small you are in those landscapes. It's a good reminder amid your own busyness and thoughts, that we are just a part of a larger whole this is best experienced in the midst of nature." Lotta

"Nature calms, restores, provides energy, and helps think more clearly. In nature, there is time to talk, to enjoy the silence, and let things unfold with a spouse or friends." –Tero

Darkening evenings and northern lights

As autumn progresses, the evenings gradually lengthen. The blue dusk covers the fells, and the sky gradually turns into nature's own magical stage. First, the bright twinkling stars appear, then the moon. Then, often quite unexpectedly, the first northern lights appear in the northern sky. They linger for a moment, crossing the sky in green and violet waves, changing shape at times and disappearing as mysteriously as they appeared.

When evening falls over the fells, the day's pace also slows. After outdoor activities, there is time to sit by the fireside, let the warmth gradually creep over your cheeks and reminisce about the day's experiences. The gentle steam of the sauna relaxes tired feet, and the dinner set in the hotel's restaurant brings together the best flavors of the north – pure ingredients, seasonal offerings, and long traditions. At the end of the day, it's easy to slip between soft hotel sheets. Outside, autumn continues on its own course, but waking up in the morning, you feel rested, your mind is clear, and there is once again a new day of Lapland's autumn experiences ahead.

"Delicious food and good wine, and definitely the combination of sauna and a dip in cool water relax and restore best towards the next day of hiking." –Lotta

The darkening autumn evenings offer excellent opportunities for admiring the northern lights, cozy evenings by the fireplace or campfire, and sauna sessions. Northern lights are often strongest in autumn, when the ground, still free of snow, provides a perfect contrast to the dark, gleaming night sky. The boldest take a dip from the sauna for an evening swim.

"I also enjoy swimming in the autumn and watching the scenery over the Äkäslompolo lake towards the fell. Of course, the sauna and good food are also enjoyable." –Tero

Autumn in Lapland is unique – 5 tips for a fall trip

Each autumn in Lapland is different. Sometimes the fall colors glow for weeks under a bright sun, while other times the fells are covered in morning mist. The first frosty nights often arrive in the north by the end of August, and the first snow might surprise by the end of September. It is precisely this unpredictability that makes the autumn in Lapland so unique – no two fall foliage trips are the same. The best experience comes from letting nature surprise you and moving at its own rhythm.

Both Tero and Lotta have returned to Lapland autumn after autumn. Based on their experiences, we've compiled five tips for a successful autumn foliage trip.

1. Make time for pauses too

Lapland's autumn need not be rushed. Even though there could be enough trails to walk on the fells for days, sometimes the most memorable moments happen just when you stop to enjoy the scenery, snacks, or silence.

"The fell can be enjoyed in many different ways. Hikes can be day trips with comfortable lodging in a hotel or cabin. Also, from the Hetta–Pallas trail, you can pick shorter sections. Last summer, I walked from Vuontisjärvi to Hannukuru, camped there, and returned the same route the next day. The fell is always different, and the open fell landscapes never tire. There are also engaging activities for children, for example, the bike park, which is open in Ylläs until the end of September." – Tero

2. Plan trips according to the weather

The autumn in Lapland lives by nature's terms. The morning can start with bright sunshine, and by afternoon, the fells are shrouded in mist. That's why it's wise to leave room for surprises in your plans.

"It's worth heading for the autumn colors without hurries or overly strict plans regarding activities: the weather changes quickly in the north, and it's best to plan and prepare the next day's trip based on the current forecast the evening before." –Lotta

3. Familiarize yourself with different mountain areas

Lapland offers endless varied landscapes. Each mountain area has its own character, its own paths, and its way of showing autumn colors. That's why you never tire of even the same destination easily – and you never stop finding new favorite places.

"Lapland has different landscapes throughout its parts. It's worth visiting different places to find your preferred scenery and varied autumn views. My personal favorite is unquestionably the Kilpisjärvi area, where you can quickly reach open landscapes above the treeline to admire the colourful tundra amidst large mountains." – Lotta

4. Choose a suitable way for you to move

You can enjoy the autumn in Lapland in many ways – by hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, or on a leisurely day trip. The most important thing is not the distance traveled, but finding a way that suits you to experience the fells and autumn nature. When the activity feels right, the landscapes open up in a whole new way.

5. Let Lapland surprise you

Lapland is never the same as on the previous trip. The fall colors, weather, light, and landscapes change from year to year, and that's what brings many back. Sometimes you remember a breathtaking fell landscape, sometimes an evening colored by the northern lights or an unhurried moment by the campfire. Often, the most valuable experiences are those you didn't expect.

Maybe that's why autumn in Lapland attracts year after year. It doesn't promise two identical trips, but each time offers the chance to discover something new – in nature, in landscapes, and perhaps also in yourself.
