Sustainability
The North is our home. Nature, local communities and people are an important part of the experiences we want to offer. On this page, we describe our practices across our hotels, restaurants, ski resorts and Lapland Safaris services, as well as the programmes that guide our environmental work.
Environmental practices in our hotels and restaurants
We monitor energy consumption across our accommodation operations and take measures to reduce it. Some of our properties use pellet heating. We reduce the use of single-use packaging and arrange for bottles and used cooking fats from our kitchens to be recycled.
In our restaurants, we work to reduce food waste. We also use local ingredients. The local products we use and their availability vary by restaurant and season.
Electric vehicle charging is available to guests at all our hotels, except Lapland Hotels SnowVillage. You can check charging availability and practical details on the hotel’s own website or at reception
Ski resorts and outdoor excursions
In our ski resort operations, we pay attention to energy use and snowmaking practices. We plan snow groomer operations and slope lighting schedules to reduce energy consumption. In snowmaking, we use oil separation equipment and oil-free air compressors. We also participate in the Green DMN project and Motiva’s Energy-Efficient Ski Resort project.
On Lapland Safaris snowmobile safaris, we use four-stroke and electric snowmobiles. We also collaborate on snowmobile product development. Our safaris comply with route access permissions and safety instructions.
We seek reuse or recycling solutions for machinery, snowmobiles, textiles and furniture that are taken out of service. The solution depends on the material and its condition.
Staff skills and wellbeing
Our staff bring northern hospitality to life every day. We support their professional skills through induction and training. We also support staff wellbeing by contributing to opportunities for physical activity.
We comply with applicable employment legislation and collective agreements. Induction and training also cover the safety and environmental instructions relevant to each role.
Guest safety
Our safety work includes staff training, operating procedures, internal monitoring and inspections by the authorities. We use the PRO24 safety management system in our accommodation operations. Food safety in our restaurants is also monitored through the authorities’ Oiva inspections.
Ski resort staff participate in safety training. Slope safety instructions, signs and guidance from staff help guests use the slopes safely. Please follow the instructions for each destination and activity, and ask our staff for advice whenever needed.
Local connections in our operations
Our roots date back to 1965. We employ local people and also purchase products and services from local suppliers. We participate in local organisations and collaboration networks.
We develop year-round tourism. This can support year-round employment and the availability of services at our destinations. We also maintain and repair existing buildings as part of our accommodation and restaurant operations.
EcoCompass guides our environmental work
Lapland Hotels and its sister companies were awarded EcoCompass certification in 2022. The certification was renewed in 2025. EcoCompass is an environmental management system that helps organisations identify their environmental impacts, set targets and monitor the implementation of measures. EcoCompass is based on the international ISO 14001 standard and is owned by the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.
Issued: 27.5.2025. Valid until: 27.5.2028.
View the certificate register.
The certification covers all areas of the tourism group’s operations: hotels and restaurants, five ski resorts in Lapland, and Lapland Safaris, the largest provider of organised activities and excursions in the Nordic countries.
