Highly popular Savurafla Kotisaari again offering BBQ dishes and lumberjack traditions in Rovaniemi
Press release | Fri May 19 09:07:00 2023
The popular Savurafla Kotisaari, by Lapland Hotels and Lapland Safaris, will open its doors again in Rovaniemi in June. The restaurant respects the lumberjack tradition and is offering BBQ dishes smoked on-site just a boat trip away from the city centre until late August.
Once again this summer, Savurafla will serve those craving for BBQ with a delicious pre-planned menu that is mostly prepared on a smoker grill. This year’s menu includes three varying kinds of grilled meat with delicious sides. We have listened to customer wishes and added coffee and varying desserts to the menu.
“There’s beef brisket, beef ribs, pork flank and a selection of pulled meats, for example. All protein is smoked on-site in Kotisaari’s real smoker oven. As sides, we offer mac and cheese and coleslaw, among other things”, says Lapland Hotels’ Head Chef Tero Mäntykangas.
Smoked food again increasing in popularity
Savurafla is situated in the old boathouse on Kotisaari Island in Rovaniemi and is only accessible by boat along the Kemijoki River. The restaurant respects the island’s history as the stronghold of lumberjacks, and history is still present in the island’s old buildings.
Savurafla’s Chef and master of smoked food is Veli-Matti Nousiainen. Nousiainen also took part in opening the restaurant last year by providing consultancy regarding smoked food and recipes.
“Smoking the food is an old and traditional way of cooking that used to be an important part of the Finnish food culture. Now smoked food is becoming increasingly popular again,” says Nousiainen.
“I got excited about smoked BBQ about five years ago. First, I tried and learned smoking food at home, and since then it has also become a part of my work in multiple projects around Finland. It is great that I can now fulfill my passion in the unique environment of Savurafla,” continues Nousiainen.
The reservation book is filling up quickly this year as well
Savurafla is open between 15 June and 26 August 2023. Table reservations have been open for booking since 8 May and tables are being booked at top speed – some of the servings are already sold out. Unlike last year, there will be one serving per night in the restaurant from Thursdays to Saturdays at 7 p.m.
“Last year there were two servings per night. With just one serving, we make sure that our guests can enjoy the ambiance of Kotisaari in peace. Our customers expressed a strong desire to be able to stay on the island a bit longer,” explains Tero Mäntykangas.
This year, Savurafla’s ambiance can also be experienced during the restaurant opening hours without pre-booking. You may also arrive in your own boat during the opening hours. “For those who have not booked the menu beforehand, we offer snacks like the brisket burger and good drinks of course,” continues Mäntykangas.
The menu price is 54 € for adults and 15 € for children (aged 4–14). The menu price includes the boat ride to the island on a river boat from Nätynginnokka’s rug washing site about 10–15 minutes before the serving. This year, Savurafla is also available for private events from Wednesdays to Sundays.
