The number of skiing days in Northern Finland generally decreased slightly from last year but was still the second highest in history. We reached an all-time high in skiing days at Ounasvaara.

The slopes continue to attract skiers, although the number of domestic skiers did not quite reach the level of the previous exceptionally good year. Nevertheless, the number of skiers continued to be clearly higher than before COVID-19. Instead, Lapland attracted plenty of international tourists, which was reflected in the number of visitors to our ski resorts. The weather conditions were variable in the winter, which caused some challenges. However, thanks to snow storage piles, the skiing season at Ounasvaara lasted from the middle of November until the end of April.

A positive trend was seen throughout the sales of additional services (ski rental, Ski Shop, ski school, slope restaurants). Equipment rental in particular is a growing segment at all our ski resorts, as our high-quality selection of equipment is so extensive that fewer and fewer people want to bring their own equipment to Lapland. The increase in costs (electricity, fuel, salaries) and availability of labour caused challenges. COVID-19 was still visible in the number of sickness-related absences.

One of the absolute highlights of the season was Ounasvaara being selected as the Local Ski Resort of the Year. The Finnish Ski Area Association honoured Ounasvaara for its long-term development efforts. Customers have also praised Ounasvaara’s team for their excellent service, and the seasonal workers have strengthened our team with their contributions.

Next season, we will continue to invest in slope repairs and lighting in particular. No larger investments are in sight, but we will be receiving, for example, some new slope machines at several destinations. Ounasvaara, for instance, will have a new slope machine, which is better suited to Snowpark maintenance. Snowparks have increased in popularity, especially at the local ski resorts. It is important to us to ensure top-class skiing facilities for our customers.
