Not to be missed

Koilliskaira is one of the last remaining wilderness areas in Western Europe. It is located in Tankavaara, some 230 km to the north of Rovaniemi and some 30 km to the south of Saariselkä. Here you can walk along nature trails of 1.3 km, 3 km and 6 km in length, get information about Urho Kekkonen National Park, and book wilderness huts in the National Park. You can collect keys, pick up fishing permits and get environmental information. Koilliskaira Visitor Centre also provides information about how state land is managed and used, the various profit centres of the Finnish Forest Administration, and nature preservation. The permanent exhibition at the Visitor Centre introduces you to the unique environment, animals and plants of the area as well as the way of life of the Sámi, reindeer husbandry and history of hiking. The centre also houses changing exhibitions.

Find gold in Tankavaara Gold Village. The northern reaches of Sodankylä are an old gold panning area. Gold can still be found today. Tankavaara Gold Village presents this tradition not only in Lapland but also on a global scale. In Tankavaara you can try your hand at panning for real gold. Every summer, one lucky visitor finds a big nugget, but nobody goes home empty-handed. The Gold Museum focuses on the history of the industry in Finland, and the Golden World informs the visitors about gold panning worldwide.

Sompio Nature Preserve is located to the south of Rautatunturi fell near Lokka reservoir. The highest fells in the area are the double peaks of Nattanens. Terävä Nattanen is 544 metres and Pyhä Nattanen is 508 metres high. Access to the park in all seasons is by following the sign-posted trails only.
