Heli-skiing right through the Spring!
The Kilpisärvi area offers unbelievably fine conditions for free
descents. Within range of just a 20 minute flight there are dozens of
mountains and fells on both the Finnish and Swedish sides of the
border. Relaxed, expansive snow fields, demanding steep gullies and
everything between. The snow cover exceeds a metre in February-March
and powder snow still appears even in May.
Heli-skiing isn't just for professionals as there a suitable places
in this large area for all levels of skiers. The first descents are in
relatively easy places so that the guide can assess the skills of the
group. For the skier with the basic skills there are plenty of
alternatives while for the more experienced off-piste skier, gully
routes will certainly present some challenges.
The scenery around Kilpisjärvi is breathtaking. The white
wilderness extends as far as the eye can see with steep rock faces
carving out their sharp outlines on the skyline. On a clear day, from
the peaks you can see as far as the Arctic Ocean and in the middle of
winter skiers in the evening can admire the flickering Northern Lights.
